Be kind to yourself

  • Recognise that you might need time to accept your diagnosis, learn about your treatment options, be treated and recover afterwards
  • Forget about perfection, be the best that you can be not what you think you should be
  • Try to think positive – many people have used their diagnosis to make positive lifestyle changes and so can you

Improve your body image

  • If you are unhappy about the way you look, do something about the things you can control – get a haircut, get yourself new makeup or have a makeover
  • Exercise – it will not only improve your mood but help you to lose weight if you need to, or help you keep toned if you are already quite active
  • Forget about what others think – everyone is different and people come in all shapes and sizes

Give yourself permission to cry

  • Crying is a healthy way to release your feelings of stress
  • Find a safe space where you can let it all out, away from other people or ask a close friend to just be there with you
  • Remember though, if the crying becomes too overwhelming on a long-term basis, see your doctor, as it might be a sign of depression for which you could be treated.

Talk about it

  • Talking with others can help to relieve stress and worry
  • Try not to shut people out, talk to your family or friends and tell them what they can do to help
  • Ask your doctor to speak to a professional counsellor if you need to

Get informed

  • Find out as much as you want to know about your condition
  • Contact a patient support group for information or to talk with others in a similar situation
  • Do not be afraid to seek out a second opinion if you feel you need it
  • Talk to your main healthcare professional if you have any questions, they are there to help

Seek help if low mood persists

  • If you have tried to improve your low mood but nothing seems to work, talk to your doctor or other healthcare professional
  • It is natural to have ups and down, but if you are lacking interest in what you normally would enjoy it is important to seek professional help
  • Counselling or medications are available to help you though if you need them
